Kimon M. – Lentil Freighter

There were many myths and stories about the wreck of the Kimon M. , because the identity was unclear for a long time and it was mistaken for other ships.

In fact, the cargo ship built in Hamburg in 1952 had many different names. Originally named MF Brunsbüttel, it was renamed Ciudad de Cucuta a year later. In 1964 he was given the name Angela, and in 1971 Kimon. When the Panamanian shipping company Janissos Shipping Co. SA became the new owner in 1975, the last renaming took place: The ship was now called Kimon M.

With a cargo of 4,500 tons of lentils on board, the Kimon M. was en route from Turkey to Bombay on December 12, 1978. At Shaab Abu Nuhas she ran into another wreck, which was on the reef. This was completely torn apart by the collision, not much of it can be seen today. The wreck of the Kimon M. itself was still sloping for some time and partly protruding from the water on the reef. Later it slipped deeper and deeper and finally broke apart. Only a few remains of the bow are left on top of the reef roof. most of the wreck sank completely and is now completely on the starboard side. Since this position is not permanently stable under pressure, the wreck may only be dived with extreme caution.
